Annual Grant Making

2023

Overview

2023 was the second year of our Foundation’s grant making. Together with Community Foundation Ireland and other stakeholders, we identified programmes and organisations under out main grant making pillars:

  • Community Resilience – with a particular focus on the wellbeing of children and young people.
  • Environment Sustainability.
  • Global Giving.

In all, our Foundation supported 19 organisations in 2023.

In addition, we co-funded eight projects as a participant in Rethink Ireland’s Impact Fund for Munster 2023 which supported sustainable development across Munster communities by funding social / environmental innovations.

Highlights

A strong focus in 2023 was a call for proposals we issued to NGOs, together with Community Foundation Ireland, for programmes to address issues of climate resilience in sub-Saharan Africa, and which resulted in two funding partnerships:

  • A ‘blue economy’ programme with Goal in Sierra Leone to protect the mangrove ecosystem and improve the viability of the artisan fisheries sector.
  • A programme with Vita to assist the repair and maintenance of water pumps in Ethiopia while part funding the work through carbon credit reclaims.

In Ireland, we co-funded with Community Foundation Ireland a scoping study into the feasibility of establishing a Mayo Sustainability Fund and the output from the study can be viewed here. Work on this fund will continue in 2024.

On our wider community resilience grant making, we funded important programmes with Jigsaw and ISPCC to promote mental health among young people.
